Band history

Early years (1996–1999)

Originally consisting of three high school friends, Linkin Park’s foundation was anchored by Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Rob Bourdon. After graduating from high school, the California natives began to take their musical interests more seriously, recruiting Joe Hahn, Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, and Mark Wakefield to perform in their band then titled Xero.

Though limited in resources, the band began recording and producing songs within Shinoda’s make-shift bedroom studio in 1996. Tensions and frustration within the band grew after they failed to land a record deal.

The lack of success and stalemate in progress prompted Wakefield, at that time the band's vocalist, to leave the band in search for other projects. Farrell would also leave the band to tour with Tasty Snax and other bands.

After spending a considerable time searching for Wakefield's replacement, Xero recruited Arizona vocalist Chester Bennington. Jeff Blue, the vice president of Zomba Music, had referred him to the band in March 1999. Bennington, formerly of Grey Daze, became a standout among applicants because of his unique singing style. The band changed their name from Xero to Hybrid Theory.

The newborn vocal chemistry between Shinoda and Bennington helped revive the band, inciting them to work on new material. The band’s renaissance culminated with a change in name; from Hybrid Theory, the band changed their name to Linkin Park, a play on and homage to Santa Monica’s Lincoln Park.

However, despite these changes, the band still struggled to sign a record deal. After facing numerous rejections from several major record labels, Linkin Park turned to Jeff Blue for additional help.

After failing to catch Warner Bros. Records on three previous reviews, Jeff Blue, now the vice president of Warner Bros. Records, helped the band sign a deal with the company in 1999. The band released their breakthrough album, Hybrid Theory, the following year.

Joe Hahn

Joe Hahn
Joseph Hahn, often referred to as Mr. Hahn, (born March 15, 1977 in Dallas, Texas) is a turntablist and director of Korean descent best known as the DJ for the American band Linkin Park.

Joe joined
Linkin Park, after meeting fellow band mate Mike Shinoda in art school, when the band was called Xero in 1996 as the band's turntablist. Since then, he has directed music videos for most singles of his band, with the exceptions of "One Step Closer", "Crawling", "Faint" and "Given Up". He is referenced to as Mr. Hahn at the beginning of "Cure for the Itch" from Hybrid Theory as well as in "And One" from Hybrid Theory EP and "Kyur4 TH Ich" from Reanimation. He has also remixed their song "With You" (originally on "Hybrid Theory"), which appears on the remix album Reanimation as "Wth>You".

On the new album Minutes to Midnight, Joe Hahn focused his contributions on programming with his sound effects board and MIDI keyboard. Minutes To Midnight also features his turntable talents on three tracks: "What I've Done", "Valentine's Day", and "In Pieces." Joe has been known to utilize MIDI pads on several tracks from the band. Examples include "Crawling", "Numb", and "By Myself".

Other projects
Joe was featured on the
Fort Minor songs "Slip Out the Back" and "Move On" (a Fort Minor Militia exclusive), tracks produced and sung by his Linkin Park bandmate Mike Shinoda. In both tracks, Hahn does some scratching in the outro. He also remixed the song "Where'd You Go" and is named "Where'd You Joe". He was also featured as a turntablist in the track "It's Goin' Down" by the The X-Ecutioners, once again alongside Shinoda. Hahn and his Linkin Park bandmates also made an appearance in the song's music video.

A proficient music video director, Joe has directed videos not only for his band Linkin Park, but he has also directed videos for Static-X, Story of the Year, Xzibit, X-Ecutioners and Alkaline Trio. Hahn has also done some special effects for the TV show The X-Files.
In 2005 to 2006, while bandmates
Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda were busy with side projects, Hahn shot a short film called The Seed in Los Angeles, California, released in March 2008 and premiered at the Pusan International Film Festival. Hahn also appeared with a minor role in a short film by Filip Engström called Little Pony. In 2005, Hahn opened a retail concept store and brand Suru, located on the famous Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Personal life
He married Karen Benedit in
February 2005 after dating her since 2003.She was born in Atlanta 1975. Hahn attended the accredited Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, but didn't graduate in order to put his efforts into the band. Joe is known for his dry sense of humor and wit in most interviews. Joe is also a Transformers fan - on various occasions he has worn clothing or used turntables with Decepticon symbols on them. He was also the one to advise the band to put the single "What I've Done" on the soundtrack for the Transformers live action movie. Joe, along with Rob and Chester, were present at the Transformers movie premiere.

Dave Farrell

Dave Farrell

David Michael Farrell (born on February 8, 1977), more commonly known as Phoenix, is the bassist for the band Linkin Park.
Biography
Farrell was born in
Plymouth, Massachusetts but moved to Mission Viejo, California when he was five. He attended Mission Viejo High School. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he met future bandmate Brad Delson in 1999. He plays the bass guitar, electric guitar, cello and violin. On occasion, he has played an upright bass at concerts.
Farrell was a member of a Christian punk/ska band known as the Tasty Snax. While attending college, he practiced with
Brad Delson. The two shared a dorm room for three years out of the four they attended UCLA. Farrell, with Delson and others then started a band called Xero, which later became Linkin Park. After changing their name to Snax, Farrell continued playing bass guitar before leaving to join Linkin Park full-time. Farrell's former bandmate Mark Fiore became Linkin Park's videographer. As described in the liner notes for Reanimation he uses an Ernie Ball MusicMan Bass.

Farrell has cited his influences as being his mother and his brother, Joe. Musical influences include Weezer, The Beatles, Deftones, The Roots, Bob Marley, Sarah McLachlan, Hughes & Wagner and Harrod & Funck.

Rob Bourdon

Robert Gregory Bourdon
(born January 20, 1979) is an American musician , who is currently the drummer and one of the founders of the nu metal band Linkin Park.

Early life
Rob was born in Calabasas, California where he grew up with members of
Incubus. Rob grew up in a Jewish family.
Rob originally played piano, but started to play the drums in 4th Grade after watching an
Aerosmith concert. His mother had dated Joey Kramer, Aerosmith's drummer, so they were able to go backstage and see the entire production; Kramer also gave Rob a bass kick pedal.
In his early teen years, Bourdon played in a few bands with his friends. Rob attended
Agoura High with Linkin Park bandmate Brad Delson as Rob had played in bands with Brad Delson in high school. Notably, a band called Relative Degree. Their goal was to play at the Roxy Theatre, after achieving their goal with a sell-out show, Relative Degree eventually broke up.
Rob's previous job before Linkin Park was a waiter.

Musical career
In the albums
Hybrid Theory and Meteora, Bourdon's style was simplistic, mostly trying to fit the drumming into the nu metal sound of the band, with only "Easier to Run" from Meteora sounding very complex as Rob had to approach his drum playing style differently. In the latest Linkin Park album Minutes to Midnight Rob's drums had wooden bodies to sound more traditional, most notably a complex 3/4 drum pattern in "The Little Things Give You Away". In live shows, playing with the song "Bleed It Out", the song is extended with Rob playing a long solo. A note about Rob's style is that he will always play the drums wearing FIA spec motorsport shoes made by Puma. He has said that it gives him better feel and control of the pedals.

Personal life
In a Z100 chat in February 2008 with Rob and Joe Hahn, DJ of Linkin Park, Bourdon stated that he is single. He dated actress
Vanessa Lee Evigan from 2001 to 2007. He previously dated actress Shiri Appleby. His 25th birthday was featured on an episode of iTunes' LPTV. On January 20, 2004, Linkin Park played a show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the band can be seen joking around backstage and saying that it is Rob's twentieth birthday. This caused some confusion among viewers. In late 2006, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park said on Tattoo Stories that his band mates Rob and main guitarist Brad Delson didn't have any tattoos for religious reasons. Both are actively of the Jewish faith. He now lives in Los Angeles.

Brad Delson

Bradford Phillip Delson

(born December 1, 1977), is a musician and the lead guitarist and one of the founding members of nu-metal band Linkin Park. He is also the A&R for Machine Shop Recordings.

Biography
Delson graduated from
Agoura High School in 1995 and formed Xero, which would later become Linkin Park, with Mike Shinoda and Rob Bourdon who he has known since the seventh grade.
Delson entered
UCLA in 1995 as a Regent Scholar. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he graduated summa cum laude and with college honors from UCLA in 1999, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with a specialization in Business and Administration. He decided to forgo law school in order to pursue a musical career with Linkin Park.
While at UCLA, where he shared a dorm room with bassist Dave Farrell for three years , Delson had the opportunity to intern with a member of the music industry as a part of his studies. He ended up working for Jeff Blue, an A&R representative at Warner Bros. Records. Blue offered constructive criticism on his demos. Blue introduced Chester Bennington, the current lead vocalist of Linkin Park to the other band members.
Delson also worked as a bouncer at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, as confirmed by "The Breakfast with Linkin Park" hosted by
Kevin and Bean of KROQ 106.7 Los Angeles, which can be heard KROQ.com.
Before forming Xero with Mark Wakefield, Delson's first instrument was the trumpet. His first band was called the Pricks, and he later played in a band called
Relative Degree with his fellow Linkin Park bandmate Rob Bourdon.
Delson can usually be seen wearing a very large pair of
headphones on stage which are made by Shure and act as his monitors. The headphones are designed by him and Shinoda and change with every Linkin Park release. Delson has not alluded to an exact reason for the headphones, but has admitted that it channels him into his own personal "matrix" while performing; he has not divulged further into what this "matrix" actually entails. Delson has not given a serious answer as to why he wears the headphones, instead quipping, "If I tell you, I'll have to kill you." In a recent interview, Mike Shinoda said that Brad wears shooting range headphones for hearing protection, then gives them to Shinoda who then makes sticker designs that are applied to the headphones.

Delson has been known for his anti-social behavior on occasions. In high school, he used to dye his hair a variety of colors, or as in earlier days of the band, he generally kept it shaved. In recent years, Delson has been seen sporting a
jewfro, which is also seen on the front cover for Minutes to Midnight.

Personal life
Brad married Elisa Boren on September 16, 2003 in a private ceremony. Brad is of the
Jewish faith.

Philanthropy
In 2004, Delson and his wife established the Delson Scholarship Fund at UCLA which annually awards four-year scholarships to extraordinary students from Huntington Park.

In 2005, Brad signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and free lessons to children in public schools throughout the United States. Brad has personally delivered instruments to children in the program and sits on the organization's board of directors as an honorary member.

Guitar playing style
Delson has been sometimes criticized for playing simple guitar parts and never performing solos. He says that he "doesn't like to show off," giving reason to the fact that performing solos is a rare act for him. He has explained that this is due to the nature of the band, and that he tries to make his guitar playing sound like a keyboard or strings to try to fit in with the
hip hop and electronica sounds of the band. However, Brad put a few solos into their new record, Minutes to Midnight, after his bandmates encouraged him to do so. Featured solo parts of Brad Delson on Minutes to Midnight are e.g. in In Pieces, The Little Things Give You Away, No More Sorrow, Shadow of the Day and What I've Done.

In the early days of Linkin Park, their usual bassist
Dave Farrell was unavailable due to touring commitments with Tasty Snax. So in Hybrid Theory, Delson also became the band's bassist during recording. He also plays the keyboard during Hands Held High while Phoenix plays the electric guitar.

Equipment
The equipment that Delson uses includes the following:
Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 guitar in dropped C# tuning
Brad's favorite guitar is his custom-made red PRS with the

MIKE SHINODA

Michael Kenji Shinoda

(born February 11, 1977)is a Japanese American musician, record producer, and artist from Agoura Hills, California. His father is Japanese American. He is best known as the rapper, keyboardist, backing vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Linkin Park, and his side project, Fort Minor. He also provides artwork, production and mixing for both groups.

Biography

Early life
Mike Shinoda was raised in the
Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills.
He first wanted to play music during his middle and high school years, he has started to play on different music tools like piano and took lessons on them. He attended Parkman Elementary and Lindero Canyon Middle School. After that, he began taking piano lessons, studying classical pianist techniques, and later moved on to jazz and hip hop. It was during this period that he added the guitar and, eventually, rap-style vocals to his repertoire.
After his teens, Mike Shinoda's rap interests found a source of encouragement in friend Brad Delson, with whom he started to write and record songs in a makeshift studio set up in his basement. Shinoda attended Agoura High School with Linkin Park bandmate Brad Delson, as well as with members of the band Hoobastank. By the end of high school, drummer Rob Bourdon had become involved in their musical ventures. The trio formed the band Xero, and began to make a more serious attempt to pursue a career in the music industry. Chester Bennington came along a few years later.
After high school, Shinoda enrolled in the
Art Center College of Design to study graphic design and illustrationIt was here that he made the acquaintance of DJ and turntablist Joseph Hahn, who, along with Delson's college-mate Phoenix, was soon added to Xero's line-up. Shinoda eventually graduated from college with a degree in illustration, securing himself a job as a graphic designer right after graduation. With his background as a graphic artist, Shinoda has taken it upon himself in designing all of Linkin Park's artwork with Hahn, and has even designed the album cover for Styles of Beyond's debut album, 2000 Fold. In later years he would go on to showcase his art skills;[citation needed] he had his debut art showcase at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles in the time leading up to Linkin Park's album Minutes to Midnight.

Linkin Park
Shinoda's band (at this point called
Hybrid Theory) brought in second vocalist Chester Bennington, replacing Mark Wakefield. From the onset, Shinoda was closely involved in the technical aspects of the band's recordings, and over the subsequent releases that role continued to expand. The first song they sang was "Crawling". Shinoda, with guitarist Brad Delson, engineered and produced the band's Hybrid Theory EP, and performed similar roles in the recording of the Hybrid Theory album. Mike executive organized and oversaw the band's remix album Reanimation (2002), contributing his own production remixes that he made in his home studio for "Crawling" and "Pushing Me Away." In his spare time, he produced and performed on a song by The X-Ecutioners entitled "It's Goin' Down."
On the second Linkin Park Warner Bros. studio release
Meteora (2003) Shinoda continued to expand upon his duties as a musician and studio technician/engineer. Additionally, for the backbone of the album artwork, Shinoda collaborated with graffiti artist DELTA, graphic designer Frank Maddocks, and band-mate Joe Hahn.
By the release of the
Linkin Park and Jay-Z 'mash-up' album Collision Course in 2004, Shinoda's involvement in the creation of the albums continued to grow. He produced and mixed the album, which won a Grammy Award for "best rap / sung collaboration" later that year.
The band released their latest album, Minutes to Midnight, on May 15, 2007. On this album, Shinoda shared a production credit with producer Rick Rubin, overseeing the musical evolution of the band's sound. This album was also the first time that Shinoda, best known for his rapping, sang a featured vocal. Mike sang on the songs "In Between", "Hands Held High" and the b-side song, "No Roads Left". Despite of the uncommonness of Shinoda-fronted singing tracks, Hit Parader ranked Mike at number 72 of the Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time.

Fort Minor
Shinoda formed a
side project named "Fort Minor" between 2004 and 2005 because he couldn't demonstrate as much of his hip-hop background in Linkin Park. He explained the name of his project in an interview:

'Fort' represents the more aggressive side of the music. 'Minor' can mean a few things: if you're talking about
music theory, the minor key is darker. I wanted to name the album rather than having my name on the cover, because I want people to focus on the music, not me.

The debut album from
Fort Minor, titled The Rising Tied, was released on November 22, 2005, and includes guest appearances from Styles of Beyond, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Black Thought of The Roots, John Legend, Holly Brook, Jonah Matranga and features Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) as an executive producer.
For the NBA 2006-2007 season, "
Remember the Name", the second single from The Rising Tied, became the soundtrack for NBA Overtime on TNT. It was an NBA remix version, and remains the staple song for NBA on TNT to this day.[citation needed] Furthermore the Big East used "Remember the Name" as its theme song for the Big East Basketball Tournament in 2006.[citation needed]
He also scored a Top 10 smash with the surprise hit single "
Where'd You Go", which peaked at #4 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After the release of the album, Shinoda also contributed to the iTunes Store by creating his own celebrity playlist.
Fort Minor won an
MTV VMA for "Best Ringtone" in 2006, and was featured in the following films and TV programs (2005-2006): Entourage, Boston Legal, Gridiron Gang, Freedom Writers, Friday Night Lights (TV), and Numbers.
Shinoda has also continued his
Fort Minor musical style in an executive producer role on the upcoming Styles Of Beyond album, "Reseda Beach" He is contributing music and vocals to the album, which is slated for release in 2008.

Shinoda's art and painting
Mike was the youngest of his graduating class from
Art Center College of Design in 1998, with a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration. He has had a hand in most artistic facets of Linkin Park's imagery, including album artwork, band merchandise, web design, and on-stage production art.
In off-time in 2003, Mike did a collaborative "remix" shoe for
DC Shoes, remixing the "Clientele." He reworked the colors and materials for the shoe, and designed all the packaging and print advertisements. The following year, he also designed a customizable Kid Robot "Munny" doll for a charity auction.
In 2004, Shinoda also started a college scholarship at Art Center College of Design to benefit illustration and graphic design students, and is awarded based on financial need and quality of work. It is called the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship; the first recipient was granted a scholarship in 2006.
Also in 2004, Shinoda created a series of 10 paintings which became the basis of the Fort Minor album The Rising Tied. That series became the backbone for the packaging of the album, and has only been presented in an art show once--at Shinoda's show at Gallery 1988. The show was entitled "Diamonds, Spades, Hearts, and Clubs."
Shinoda has done collaborative artwork with: Gary Baseman, DELTA, graffiti artist SEEN, DALEK, Greg "Craola" Simkins, and Mr. Hahn.
Mike is currently working on another DC remix in 2008, which will come in standard, plus more than one Limited Edition styles. The shoe and packaging will again feature his artwork.
Mike is currently preparing for his second art show "Glorious Excess (Born)" which is the first of two series. This show includes nine new pieces. The show commences on July 11 at the Japanese American National Museum, with an exclusive signing.

Proceeds from the sales of art on his website (mikeshinoda.com), the Gallery 1988 shows, and DC Shoes projects all benefit the Michael K. Shinoda endowed scholarship.

Production
Shinoda has produced tracks for albums by
Lupe Fiasco and Styles of Beyond, as well as producing or co-producing all of Linkin Park's non-studio albums, including Reanimation, Hybrid Theory EP, the collaborative EP with Jay-Z, Collision Course, and for the first time producing a studio album in 2007, the group's third studio release Minutes to Midnight.
